Understanding the Roots of Challenging Behavior
Description
Children desire to be loved and treasured. Children often experience the emotions of being loved and being treasured as having their basic needs met. Some children are not as naturally skilled as others in communicating their needs. What looks like challenging behavior is often a child having an unmet need, communicating is the only way they know how - screaming, crying, hitting their head on the wall, not "complying". By examining a child's basic needs, adults can better learn to listen to different communication styles and behaviors of children. This creates a common language that both adults and children share that can be used to meet needs.
